Announcing 2019 Voices Project and Podcasting Workshops

As we all look ahead to new ways to connect with our community in 2019, Radio Boise is excited to announce several opportunities for budding producers and members of the community to apply their interests in local history, storytelling, science, and the humanities toward producing high-quality interview and features for broadcast.

Although several new partnerships and workshops are also in the works, we’re featuring the first of these new opportunities scheduled to kick off this February. Radio Boise will be launching a partnership with the Idaho Humanities Council for three podcasting/audio production workshops in 2019, with an ultimate goal of creating radio content that inspires discovery and wisdom in relation to Idaho’s history, culture, and traditions through the act of creating and listening. Financial support for this project is being provided by the Idaho Humanities Council and National Endowment for the Humanities.

Pieces produced through these workshops will be distributed as composite, half-hour “magazine” shows during our afternoon public affairs block, shorter segments throughout our regular programming schedule, as well as a podcast format available for on-demand listening. These broadcasts will be under the umbrella of Radio Boise’s Voices Project, with each workshop based around a central theme or area of interest.

In total, these 3 workshops will engage 30-36 individuals and serve as the next step in our ultimate goal of creating a weekly Voices Project broadcast on Radio Boise. With workshops ranging in length from weekend intensives to a longer format, Radio Boise will strive to provide a range of quality opportunities that are as accessible as possible to residents of the Treasure Valley. Experienced and novice producers are encouraged to participate.

The program will kick off with a February 2019 weekend-long “Radio Race” under the theme of “Intersection.” Participants will receive instruction on the art of the story, interviewing techniques, audio production, and creating a compelling narrative featuring local voices and perspectives. In May/June, the partnership will offer a longer six-week workshop with an opportunity for more in-depth instruction. Another weekend intensive workshop will be held in the fall.

A link to the application for “Intersection” will be available through the January edition of our e-newsletter and one our website next month, and the $50 workshop fee will be waived for those who request a scholarship. Previous examples of pieces produced through a Voices Project weekend “Radio Race” can be heard on Radio Boise’s Soundcloud page.

Questions about the Voices Project and workshops can be sent to Radio Boise’s Program Director Wayne Birt at wayne@radioboise.org. You can also take our year-end survey to help inform our efforts to provide more on-demand content and engage members of the community in our podcasting and audio production workshops.
