Voices Project

The Voices Project, launched in 2016, is a program where we offer professional-level radio storytelling and podcasting instruction to the community at low or no cost, and then broadcast the stories that come out of such workshops on Radio Boise.

Part of the vision for the Voices Project is the belief that public radio should provide a platform for all voices in the community that it serves. What better way to reflect the fullness of our community than to ask our neighbors to tell their own stories, in their own voices and then share those stories through Radio Boise!?

It’s kind of like “farm-to-table”, but for radio: fresh, home-grown, and hyper-local!

In these workshops, participants go from zero to finished radio piece in just a few weeks, or sometimes as fast as one weekend: our annual ‘Radio Race’.

The Voices Project podcast process includes instruction on recording equipment usage, interviewing skills, story development, script writing, voice coaching and digital software editing. From there, producers be able to produce more pieces on their own.

No experience is necessary for interested storytelling producers, but there’s enough depth in the curriculum for someone with some broadcasting experience to build next-level skills.

Each new workshop typically has a theme: “Change” “Uncharted Territories” or “Intersections.” The themes are intentionally broad, but provide a thread that connects the individual stories into one cohesive broadcast.
