Job Title: Underwriting Manager

Radio Boise Mission and History 

Radio Boise is a non-profit community radio station committed to providing a platform for alternative voices and perspectives in Boise and beyond. The station’s goal is to make sure  we’re filling a unique niche in music and local-interest programming that is refreshing, engaging, and helps expand our listeners’ viewpoints. Founded as a non-profit in 2002 and broadcasting over the airwaves since 2011, Radio Boise is powered by hundreds of committed volunteers,  programmers, and supporters. 

 

Summary of Underwriting Activities

Daily life for an underwriting representative in community radio is similar to that of a sales person in commercial radio or local print media, except with a more “personal touch.”  A successful underwriting representative at Radio Boise is expected to make cold-calls to decision-makers at local and regional businesses, meet with them to understand their marketing needs, and to make sure those needs continue to be met.  The role of the Underwriting Manager is to maintain current relationships and cultivate new partnerships for mutually beneficial community outreach.

 

Requirements for Obtaining Underwriting for Public Radio

The position requires excellent, professional communication, including a positive demeanor and good writing skills. The successful candidate must be skilled in the “art of persuasion,” be able to manage their time independently, prioritize effectively, and be goal-oriented. The position requires 3 years of relevant experience.  Media or marketing-related sales experience is preferred.

                  

Scope of Work:

  • Be familiar with and conduct all activities in compliance with the relevant underwriting guidelines and regulation of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for non-commercial radio
  • Obtain underwriting support for Radio Boise from current and potential customers, including renewals and event-based underwriters
  • Prospect and obtain new underwriting for the station
  • Take initiative toward problem-solving and recommending creative underwriting solutions for clients and support staff
  • Assist Radio Boise in the development of marketing and promotional strategies
  • Participate in Radio Boise conducted events and activities as reasonably appropriate
  • Learn and be able to navigate the computer software that enables scheduling, documentation, and invoicing for all underwriting activities
  • Create, review for accuracy, and file daily/monthly logs
  • Create and schedule Radio Boise Underwriting (Spots)
  • Create and schedule Radio Boise Promotional spots (Promos) 
  • Create and schedule Public Service Announcements (PSA’s) 
  • Generate Invoices, per account, each month and provide that information to A/R
  • Learn, understand, and constantly explore the radio business and industry
  • Be able to work independently, and collaboratively within a team environment
  • Represent Radio Boise proudly and professionally to the retail and business community
  • Provide a high level of customer service to Radio Boise customers
  • Work with General Manager to create effective promotions and campaigns for Radio Boise clients

 

Attitude and Skills

  • Sensitivity to the goals, culture and ethics of Radio Boise
  • Familiarity with the business community in the Treasure Valley area
  • Minimum three years of relevant experience
  • Media sales experience helpful
  • College degree preferred
